Ep 53: Rad Dads w/ Robb & Patrick of Limbeck

This is an episode about dads? This is an episode about kids? This is an episode about songs dads play for their kids? WHO KNOWS anymore! What is certain is that we have Robb & Patrick of Limbeck join us this week.

There’s a lot of good music out there for adults. But, there’s also a surprisingly amount of really cool songs for kids. Robb & Patrick are the coolest dads we know so we asked them to put together a special mix of songs they not only their kids love but that we ALL love.

We do play a song by Justin Townes Earle who passed away days after recording this episode. Thank you to Mike for providing a disclaimer at the beginning of this show and sharing his thoughts as a fan.

Ep 52: Take a Walk(Man) on the Wild Side

You didn't think we could make an episode about walking interesting, but ya know what? WE DID!

Even though we're all stuck in doors during these Covid-Quarantine times you gotta get outdoors once and a while. We made the perfect mix to go along with your neighborhood stroll.

So grab your Walkman, some sensible shoes, and our podcast and enjoy your walk!

Ep 51: 3rd Wave Ska w/ Special Guest Taylor Morden

Sorry, not sorry, but we here at MM!PP! stan 3rd wave ska for life. Once a ska kid always a ska kid.
In this week’s brand new full-length show Mike and Julia bring the history of ska to an end with a mix all about the 3rd wave. What better way to round off this ska trilogy than to have a special guest!

Taylor Morden, director of Pick it Up! Ska in the 90s, joins MM!PP! to discuss his film, ska, and more ska.

As an active musician and super fan of the scene Taylor created a film that discusses the history, fans and rapid rise of Ska in the 90s.

from skamovie.com:

Pick It Up! is an independent documentary film about the rise in popularity of ska music in the 1990s often referred to as the third wave of ska.  The film showcases the underground / DIY nature of the scene all over the world and how the push into the spotlight in the mid-to-late '90s changed everything.  The film was made by ska fans, for ska fans.

The film features exclusive interviews with members of:

The Aquabats • Big D and the Kids Table • Bim Skala Bim • Blink-182 • Bomb the Music Industry! • Buck-O-Nine • Catch 22 • Cherry Poppin’ Daddies • Dance Hall Crashers • Desorden Publico • Fishbone • Five Iron Frenzy • Goldfinger • The Goodwin Club • Hepcat • The Hippos • The Impossibles • Inspector • The Interrupters • Jump With Joey • Kemuri • King Apparatus • La Resistencia • Less Than Jake • Let’s Go Bowling • The Mad Caddies • Maldita Vecindad • Mephiskapheles • The Mighty Mighty Bosstones • MU330 • Mustard Plug • My Superhero • New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble • No Doubt • The Nuckle Brothers • the O.C. Supertones • Oingo Boingo • The Pietasters • Pilfers • The Porkers • Reel Big Fish • Rx Bandits • Save Ferris • The Selecter • Skankin’ Pickle • The Skatalites • The Slackers • Smashmouth • The Specials • Spring Heeled Jack • Starpool • Streetlight Manifesto • Sublime • Suburban Legends • The Suicide Machines • The Toasters • Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra • Voodoo Glow Skulls • and a bunch of other super rad ska related people!

You can watch Pick It Up! Ska in the 90s on Amazon Prime and Vimeo on Demand.

Be sure to check out Taylor’s other projects:

  • The Last Blockbuster Trailer: A feature length documentary film about the rise and fall of Blockbuster video.

  • Project 88: An 88 scene fan remake of Back to the Future 2. From the website - “With so many creative people stuck at home, we wanted to give people a creative outlet.  Something that anyone could do.  We had people from around the world recreate scenes from Back to the Future 2 using only what they had access to during the quarantine.  The results are a marvel of creativity.  The best part however, is hearing from the people who worked on the project, how much fun they had and how it brought some joy in a dark time.

                                          -Taylor”

Ep 50!!!!!! Stay Together for the Kids

50 Episodes y’all! (more like 79 but we’re only counting full episodes here)

As we’ve been moving through out 30 Day Song Challenge on our Insta @mixtapemixtapepodcast we found a topic that really hit hard: bands we love that are no longer together. Why do they break up? Why do they stop at their prime? We certainly don’t have the answers, but we’re playing the songs we love just the same.

Here’s to 50 more!

Ep 49: Dramaz w/ special guest Eduardo Alvarado

We are so happy to have our friend Eddie Alvarado on the show this week. Eddie works on a lil show called South Park. He loves two things: music and the drama. Together we discuss South Park, celeb drama, internetz drama, & covid-19 drama. We play all the dramaz in songs. Whether it’s the lyrics, the beat or the right moment to use it. Listen in! And watch South Park, cuz duh, it’s South Park.

MM!PP! Singles No. 28

Another week at home means another week of discovering new music. Listen to this week’s Single-minisode where Mike and Julia play their favorite song for the week.

Ep 48: Some Kind of (Wonderful) Mixtape

How did we not think of this sooner?! We’re paying tribute to beloved director John Hughes. Best known for his 80’s hits like Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club, he created films that we watch and re-watch and connect with. His characters are great but even better are the songs he’s chosen for background and soundtracks. We’re taking our most favorite songs from our most favorite John Hughes films and sharing that mixtape with you!

Ep 47: This are Radio Clash

The world may feel like a mess right now but thank goodness for technology. Thanks to super-producer Christina we Zoom recorded this week’s episode.

For your listening pleasure (and because we have the time) we took a deep dive in to one of Julia and Mike’s favorite band in the whole world: THE CLASH. In this episode you will hear the best and some unfamiliar Clash songs from the first to last album.
